Astronomy Class Wins First Place in Space Contest

Congratulations to Mr. Russ Glenn’s Astronomy class—The Galactic Crusaders—for a first place win at the “Cities in Space” competition! The competition, which took place at the Palmer Events Center on October 18, was sponsored by New Worlds Institute, a non-profit organization that advocates for the exploration and eventual colonization of space. Pictured here are: Front Row, Left to Right: Gabriella Haas, Tori Eller, Emma Leasure, and Hunter Edgerly; Back Row, Left to Right: Joseph Gromatzky, Alexander Elledge, Mr. Glenn, and Nathan Wilkins. Those students in the class who worked on the project but are not pictured here are Bruce Xie, Alex Beckett, Alex Graf, Darian Townsend, Liz Hammel, Elizabeth Schneider, and Santiago Delgado.
The students designed and presented on what an inter-generational space mission might look like. They worked on many different aspects of how a 500-year mission might take shape. Topics researched by students included culture, the economy, jobs in water and air recycling, a judicial system, government, waste reclamation, recycling, entertainment, food production, housing, population control, rationing, mental and physical health, and hospital care in space.

They even designed and created a 3-D printed version of the spacecraft itself!

In addition to their presentations, students heard from experts in the space industry, including:
  • Richard Gariott - Private astronaut and entrepreneur
  • Robyn Gatens- NASA Deputy Director of the International Space Station
  • Tom Moser - Former NASA engineer for the Apollo Command Module
  • John Mankins - Former NASA Chief Technologist for Human Exploration of Space
