Healthy Eating, Healthy Life! Locavore Club Gets Expert Help from A&M

The Locavore Club is not only drawing excitement from the students at St. Michael’s but also receiving attention from those affiliated with Texas A&M University. At its meeting on November 11, the club was visited by three individuals from the Master Gardening Program at A&M. After hearing about the club, Texas Master Gardeners Anne Forish, Connie Boltz, and Phyllis Janowski met with student-gardeners and club moderator Mr. Russ Glenn to lend a helping hand and provide informational advice, and they are interested in keeping tabs on the progress of the club’s organic garden going forward.
Student-gardeners of the Locavore Club have already planted broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and red and regular romaine lettuce in the school’s organic garden, which is located outside the exit near the Writing Center. Lavender, oregano, rosemary, thyme, and chives are currently growing in the herb section of the garden, while peppers, asparagus, and strawberries planted last year are thriving.

The Texas Master Gardeners is a volunteer program designed to disseminate horticultural information throughout the state, town by town. It is affiliated with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. Its members work on building a cadre of gardening volunteers, and the program is divided by county; our visitors were representing Hays County.
