Literature through the Arts

This week in Ms. Reeves's Honors English I class, students looked at Thomas Cole's painting series, The Course of Empire, and discussed what causes civilizations to rise and fall. They reflected on various elements of cultural development and disintegration in preparation for a unit on H.G. Wells's novel, The Time Machine, in which an inventor travels to a post-agricultural and (seemingly) post-industrial society.
In considering the novel, students will think about debates over class, education, and economics that were at the center of British Victorian society.
