A total of 16 seniors have secured internships in varied fields of industry, medicine, and government. Of those students, 12 are working here in Austin, one in Buda, one in San Antonio, one in China, and one in Taiwan. We’d like to share a few of their reflections on the experience so far.
Victoria MacClements, who is shadowing doctors and nurses in the craniofacial department at Dell Children’s Hospital in Austin, spoke of her experience on one day, “As I left the operating room and began to walk to my car, I realized the gravity of what I had just witnessed, and the enormous impact of medical professionals, particularly of surgeons. It was incredible to be able to watch such talented doctors demonstrating their craft, and, fortunately for me, I get to do exactly the same thing tomorrow.”
“I really enjoyed the way my Winter Term internship kicked off,” reported Roberto Berrios-Garcia, who is participating in public health research projects at the Department of State Health Services in Austin. “I have met some amazing people and their staff. I have been able to absorb some really important and interesting information about the role of DSHS, and how its many departments and divisions function to improve the lives and health of every Texan. There is no question that this internship has really helped me get a better understanding of the world of public health.”
Xinru Huang, who is interning in marketing and sales for a yacht tourism company in China, Jiu Tiandao Commerce and Trading Company, said, “During the internship, dealing with different people is more interesting than working itself. This internship not only has given me the chance to learn something I cannot learn from the school, but also offered me a unique social experience. I am fortunate to be able to improve my skills during the internship.”
“I just couldn't stop smiling, and in that moment I realized that I love this job. I wish I could do it forever,” reports Gavriel Griffin, who is working as a teacher’s aide in a special needs class at J Houston Elementary School in Austin.
Lilly Pace, who is assisting the Managing Editor and shadowing journalists at the San Antonio Express News, said of one particular day, “Today was so exciting, because it solidified my interest in a career of journalism.”
