Ms. Ammons Granted Scholarship to Study in Spain this Summer

Spanish teacher Laura Ammons has been granted a scholarship by Mester Academia in Salamanca, Spain, to study the incorporation of technology into the classroom by Spanish teachers worldwide. The two-week summer course at Mester, which was founded in 1991 to offer Spanish teaching programs and college student exchanges, is designed to aid Spanish teachers in the instruction of the Spanish language and culture. The course will focus on such subjects as geography; current events; rituals, behavior, and social events; art and history; gastronomy, the Mediterranean diet and Tapeo; holidays and festivities; cinema as a vehicle of class culture; literary texts; written expression in the classroom; and the rhythm of grammar and music.
Mester has adapted its classrooms to the latest technology and now offers instruction to Spanish teachers on how to use interactive whiteboards and network-connected computers in the classroom to teach such subjects.

Classes will run every day from 9:00am until 2:00pm, and her schedule will include some travel. She applied for the scholarship through the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. The all-expenses paid course will enable Laura to offer more interactive and interesting classes at St. Michael’s, she reports.
