English Teacher Ms. Tori Davis to Study at Cambridge This Summer

English faculty member Tori Davis has been selected for a summer seminar at Cambridge University to study the teaching of English literature. She also received a fellowship to cover part of the cost of the one-week seminar in early July, which is being sponsored by the Foundation for International Education in cooperation with Oxbridge Academic Programs.
The Study Group will read and discuss selected texts by major writers, exploring critical ideas in practical criticism and how these may be presented in classrooms worldwide. Readings will focus on the works of such authors as George Herbert, Christopher Smart, Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, Alfred Tennyson, Wordsworth, Vladimir Nabokov, and Virginia Woolf, among others. “How should we read? How close should ‘close reading’ get? In what ways does literature relate to politics, ethics, and religion—and how have these relations changed over time? Are there criteria for judging the quality of literary works?”

These are some of the questions that participants will discuss, with an eye toward how answers might influence the way literature is taught in the classroom. Ms. Davis will also have the chance with the group to visit sites of special literary interest around Cambridge, including the Orchard in Grantchester and the former colleges of famous writers and poets. Many congratulations, Ms. Davis!
