Ecology Class Studies Detention Pond at St. Michael’s

Mr. Russell Glenn’s ecology class took advantage of a break in the rain to take water quality measurements at the detention pond behind St. Michael’s. The detention pond, affectionately called “Lake Schiraldi” by the students, was put into place to capture the added runoff that comes when buildings and other impermeable surfaces are added to an area. The students measured dissolved oxygen, phosphate, nitrate, chromium, copper, iron, chloride, chlorine, pH, and ammonia levels at the detention pond.
Students found higher levels of phosphates, nitrates, and chlorine than expected. They will spend the next few days trying to determine the origin of these contaminants. The ecology class will continue to monitor the quality of Lake Schiraldi and other water sources around the school throughout the spring.
