The St. Michael’s Writing Center is modeled after the highly successful centers at the University of Texas and the University of Texas Law School. The SMCA Writing Center is one of the first in the dynamic Writing Center movements to be instituted in a high school setting. In its eighth year of operation, the Writing Center is staffed by English teachers from our Humanities group. Realizing the importance of the Writing Center’s mission, the administration has dedicated classroom space and computers, as well as funding for the staff positions. In order to ensure that students graduating from St. Michael’s are skilled in all aspects of written expression, the Writing Center exists to serve the school community in the following ways.
  • To provide intensive hands-on instruction in writing for any and all types of academic writing purposes
  • To provide one-on-one assistance to students with writing concerns, such as finding topics for papers; clarifying and organizing ideas; researching, drafting, and revising papers; resolving issues of grammar, punctuation and usage
  • To provide guidance and support for online research, especially to heighten awareness of the issues of plagiarism and identification of valid high-quality source material
  • To provide assistance to students writing college admissions essays
  • To coordinate and actively promote publication of student writing through contests, websites, and publications geared toward teen writers, including Erin—the St. Michael’s Catholic Academy Literary Magazine
  • To train students with excellent writing skills to serve as mentors to students who need additional support and guidance
  • To create online writing resources that can be easily accessed by the entire SMCA community
  • To serve faculty by providing assistance in assigning and evaluating writing and incorporating writing assignments into lesson planning across the curriculum
