Spanish Art and History at San Antonio Exhitibit (By Aitor Arrondo, Spanish Instructor)

AP Spanish Language and the AP Spanish Literature classes went to San Antonio on September 11 to see the spectacular and historical paintings of the exhibition Spain: 500 Years of Spanish Painting from the Museums of Madrid. The museum’s guide took us on an artistic and historical journey, starting with El Greco’s dramatism and expressionism, 16th century. Then we moved to Velazquez’s realistic and complex portraits, 17th century.
We later enjoyed Goya’s nobility portraits, and his social and political criticism of Spain captured in other paintings, 18th century. We continued with the impressionist Sorolla and his landscapes from the Mediterranean coast, 19th century. The wonderful tour ended with the most important figure of the 20th century in terms of art and art movements that occurred over this period: Pablo Picasso. If you are interested in this exhibition, you’ll have to hurry because it ends September 16.

Afterwards, we went to the popular Mi Tierra restaurant and enjoyed Mexican food and the friendly atmosphere of this singular and beautiful place. We left Austin at 9:00 am and returned at 3:00 pm with mission accomplished because we learned much about the art and history of Spain, and we had fun at the same time.
