World Literature Classes Read Sophocles (By Paula Priour, English Instructor)

Sophomores, who are studying World Literature, are reading Sophocles' plays from the Oedipus Cycle. These plays form an important part of the canon of Western Literature, since they were the models Aristotle later used to define tragedy.

In addition to reading the plays and analyzing the concept and structure of a tragedy, students are preparing and performing choral odes, much as the ancient Greeks did. Groups construct dramatic masks and choreograph movements to choral odes first performed in outdoor amphitheaters 2500 years ago.
