Vanessa Garlepp Named National Merit Semifinalist

Vanessa is one of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

"It feels awesome to be a semifinalist when I know it is such a small group of people. Prep is important, and knowing sophomore year I was on the right track gave me confidence going into my test."

Vanessa now has an opportunity to continue in the competition for one of 7,500 National Merit Scholarships and credits St. Michael's College Counseling faculty for attaining this recognition. A well-rounded student, Vanessa serves on Senior Leadership Team, and is involved in theater, the Honors Inquiry Project, and is currently taking three AP courses.

"St. Michaels is really good about making you aware of what to expect and how to reach national merit ranking. In sophomore year, you start preparing and take your first PSAT. They break down what national merit is going to be, and then you are prepared junior year and know what to expect," said Vanessa.
There are approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.
