School Lockdown Drill A Success

As we continue to bolster our safety procedures at St. Michael's, our campus, in conjunction with the Travis County Sheriff's Office, completed a successful lockdown drill Wednesday morning. Thank you to all our faculty and staff for following proper protocol and procedure and assisting in an effective drill. We ask that our student body, faculty and staff continue to be mindful to keep all doors closed and to use key fobs for entry.
As we head into the second quarter of the school year, we continue to make continuous efforts to improve upon the security initiatives addressed earlier this year including:
  • Drills: For security reasons, there are newly-designated areas to which our community evacuates for a drill or real life scenario.  This is designed so that our whole community does not exit to one set place. All exits are posted in classrooms, and students were made aware of where to go in the event of an alarm. In addition, we will adopt additional types of drills this year. Moving beyond the mandatory fire drill, evacuation, lock down, increased security, and active shooter drills have been implemented with the assistance of fully trained local authorities.
  • Access Fobs: During the summer, remote locks were placed on all exterior doors throughout campus, similar to those already in place on the main academic building. These will be active (locked) at all times; students still may enter any doors, but will need their fob key in order to access the facilities. A list is being collected of all returning students who need a replacement key and they will be distributed well before this change is made.
  • Visitors: For entry into the main academic building, there will be a camera and buzz-in button housed at the reception desk. All visitors are asked to check in and retrieve a visitor badge before walking around campus.
