St. Michael's Celebrates 35 Years: Our Legacy Families!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, ST. MICHAEL'S!

We continue St. Michael's 35th Anniversary by celebrating our legacy families. Multiple generations are represented at St. Michael’s — from founding board members and their children to alumni who return to teach and volunteer.

Nicolette Cannata, whose son Alexander is also a St. Michael’s current junior, is one such legacy family. Not only Nicolette, but 8 Cannata siblings attended St. Michael’s from its early years right up until 2011!
“I was a junior coming into St. Michael’s, and it was a big transition from an all-girls academy in New Jersey, but I was able to find my place on the drill team and in the theater group, which was much smaller than what the school has today,” said Nicolette.

Nicolette was able to share her love for theater under the guidance of Mrs. Sharp. She also told a familiar anecdote about Fr. Lopez.

“Fr. Lopez was the principal at the time, and his goal was to make sure the school continued to grow. Anyone who attended St. Michael’s while Fr. Lopez was principal, would know that he was the "coupon king." He would have stacks of coupons and was happy to share if there was a need.”

A National Honor Society student, Nicolette’s son Alex has excelled and has built meaningful relationships with his teachers.

“I chose St. Michael’s for Alex because I wanted to make sure he had the opportunity to not only get a college prep education in a Christian environment, but also have the chance to participate in extracurricular activities. As a junior, he is able to take AP courses, but also play varsity baseball and captain the drumline, which makes for a great balance. When Alex toured the school in eighth grade, the first thing he said when he got home was that he was excited about the class sizes because they were small,” Nicolette said.

Nicolette also loves the fact that Alex attends Mass on a weekly basis and has time during school for quiet and reflection.

“It is my alma mater, so of course I was excited that Alex would walk the same halls, be recognized by some of the same teachers I and my siblings had, and have a special high school experience. I look forward to see what’s next as he finishes junior year and starts his last year as a Crusader,” Nicolette said.

"My teachers will help me with anything I want to achieve. Had it not been for their support, I might not be in the position I am today, and for that I am extremely grateful," Alex said.

Stay tuned as we share more milestones and moments from founders, students, parents, trustees, and alumni during the month of January.
