Winter Term 2019 Week One

Students in the Serving Austin Winter Term course are holding a book drive.

MINI-COURSES:

It's a challenge to keep up with all that is going on with these specialty classes, but we were able to capture some of the activity in Printmaking, Napoleonic Wars, Engineering & Construction, Illuminating Stage Visions, and a few more. Enjoy a walk-about gallery of photos from the first days' activities around campus!

FRANCE:

After traveling by planes and trains, France exchange students arrived in Angers! They were greeted by French students and faculty at the train station with cheers and an enormous American flag!   They then took a short walk over to the lycee (high school), where they were shown around the school, and snacked on croissants and tasty pastries that were prepared for their arrival.

ECUADOR:

While their travels were long yesterday, they were also very smooth. They are staying in La Familia RioFrio, which is absolutely lovely. They had tasty local treats last night; pan de yuca with a fruit yogurt which everyone loved. It was a great end to their travel day. Today they are off to start touring the city.

GALVESTON:

After discussing the meaning of conservation in the classroom, the Marine Conservation class went to see conservation in action at two very different preserves. Their first stop was the famous Hamilton Pool Preserve where they received a private tour and learned about the conservation practices needed to maintain the iconic park and swimming hole. Next stop was the Shield Ranch. It is the largest ranch (6800 acres) in Travis County. This gem of the hill country is actively managed as a conservancy with the Nature Conservancy and the City of Austin. Our tour guides shared their practices and led us through a beautiful hike through a small portion of the ranch.

GUATEMALA:

After their day of travel, students are relaxing and preparing for the start of the service projects. Spirits are high and everyone is anxious to get going. Their host treated them to some Domino's Pizza on the way to the retreat center. After they arrived and everyone had time to settle in, the group had a brief orientation, followed by a bit of time to reflect on the mission ahead.
