Student Wellness & Mental Health Support (By Neilia Bliss, R.N., M.A.)

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Mental Illness Awareness Week this month served as a clear reminder of how important it is to address mental health conditions, especially in the high school setting. At St. Michael's, students know that resources and support are available to them if they are struggling with anxiety, depression or other mental health issues. Our Director of Student Wellness, Lauren Gavin, and I are available on campus every school day.
One additional bit of information that I wanted to share with students comes from the Mental
Health America website (https://www.mhanational.org). Many of our high school students are
busy and often fail to take time to focus on healthy behaviors that can truly influence the way
they feel. Below is a great checklist for students (and parents!) to incorporate into their
everyday lives.
  1. Address your basic needs. Taking care of your basic needs can make big difference. Eat healthy snacks, stay hydrated, and rest if you need to. Getting adequate sleep is very important.
  2. Make time for your hobbies. It’s important to make time for your hobbies. Take breaks from your work and to do things that you personally enjoy.
  3. Practice relaxation exercises. If you’re feeling stressed, try a relaxation exercise to calm your mind. A few examples include listening to music, reading a book, going on a walk and doing yoga.
  4. Volunteer for others. Research has found that giving back to others can increase a sense of life satisfaction and overall happiness.
  5. Ask for help. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you are struggling to handle the pressure of school or work, or just need someone to talk to, reach out to an adult or friend that you trust.
