Grief and Loss in Teens (By Lauren Gavin, Director of Student Wellness)

In light of the recent sudden loss of Junella Sgro, a St. Michael's and St. Gabriel's parent well-known to our community, and given that dozens of our students chose to attend the funeral service this past Tuesday, we would like to offer the following guidance on teens and grieving.

While most teens have a conceptual understanding of death they can still experience challenges during grieving. Although teens often prefer to turn to their peers for support in many situations they will benefit from additional explanation, conversation and emotional support by an adult during times of grief and loss. It is important to help teens understand that grief.
