Students Participate in STEAM-SPACE 'Cities in Space' 5th Annual Competition (By Russell Glenn, Environmental Sciences & Honors Inquiry Program Instructor)

On Friday, February 28, two freshman and five sophomores headed to the campus of Huston-Tillotson University to compete in the fifth annual “Cities in Space” competition. This competition is put on each year by STEAM-SPACE, a local non-profit dedicated to space science education.
The students, Kalen Jaroszewski, Pierce McNiven, Jake Cameron, Bennet Eichorst, Neil Flores, Carson Cashatt, and Daniel Pinzon spent Winter Term designing a 1,000 person colony that could survive the harsh environment of the Moon. They represented their teams admirably, bringing home two awards for their hard work.
The freshman team, named SPARTA, focused on building a dome and represented their work using a Minecraft movie. The sophomore team, Lunar Colony, decided to build most of their colony under the lunar surface and represented their work with a whiteboard sketch video. To participate in the competition, students also had to write a 10-page paper showing their research.
In addition to the competition, the students heard from professionals in the space industry, including:
  • Thomas Markusic, CEO of Austin’s Firefly Aerospace,
  • Sharon Hagle, the Founder of Spacekids Global,
  • Dr. Leon Vanstone, a research associate at UT Austin,
  • Dr. Amanda Massino, Associate Biology Professor at Huston-Tillotson University,
  • Jeff Smith, Material Control Analyst at Ball Aerospace,
  • M. Wade Holler, Creative and Technical Director at Explore Mars Inc., and
  • Jancy McPhee, Executive Director at the SciArt Exchange
The students' hard work paid off as the freshman team earned 2nd place and the sophomore team earned an Honorable Mention in the science and engineering category. Be sure to stop by the front desk to see the trophies!
