Virtual English Language & Literature Classes (By Ramsay Wall, English Instructor)

Our studies in English language and literature continue unabated in our new virtual classrooms! Since we’ve returned from spring break, students have stayed busy. In English I, freshmen have finished reading the graphic novel Persepolis and are now using the knowledge they’ve gained from this book about the Iranian Revolution of 1979 as a springboard to research another important historical revolution.
Some students have chosen to research the French Revolution, others have chosen the Cuban Revolution, and still others another in the more recent past. Students are learning how to find credible sources, how to create article summaries, how to synthesize information from those disparate sources, and how to create a Works Cited page using MLA format.

In English II, the sophomores are also hard at work. Currently in English II, students are studying poetry. Students are learning how to read poems critically, how to analyze a poem’s structure and use of literary devices, and how to excavate a poem’s themes. Students will also have an opportunity to create a poem of their own next week. Once we’re completed our poetry unit, we will move on to a research assignment about imperialism and colonialism as a prelude to our last novel, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe.

Between Zoom meetings, Google Classroom, and other online resources, students in English are getting things done.
