The Mung Bean: Symbol of Asian Culture (By Meishing Chen, Mandarin Instructor)

Mandarin II and Mandarin III students were given mung bean growing kits before the end of last quarter and have been working hard on their home experiments as their first Asian culture assignment for this quarter. They've enjoyed taking care of their mung beans, watering them three times a day for a week in the dark. Some of them are ready to restart this experiment at home.

The mung bean is a very typical symbol of Asian culture. Mung beans and mung bean sprouts are widely used in Asian communities all over the world. Thanks to the pandemic and virtual learning, I am very glad I have this opportunity to teach my students to grow, to observe and to research mung beans at home.

Students are not only growing mung beans, but will also present their observations and research in English and Mandarin next Monday on Zoom. It will be recorded and shared with the St. Michael's community. I can't wait to watch their presentations!
