Film Classes Host Professional Panels (By James Dziedzic, Film Instructor)

For this year’s Winter Term film classes, I continued the tradition of reaching out to the professional community to provide real-world industry exposure for students.

In the Documentary class, the students are preparing to shoot their own documentary shorts. Multi award-winning documentary filmmaker Dan Napoli spoke with students about the process to produce a documentary. Dan has produced several films, most notably the baseball documentary 50 Summers, which has won awards worldwide, including several at the Austin Revolution Film Festival.

In Baseball in Cinema class, the students are studying the game of baseball and its role in American culture. As host of the baseball show Let's Get Two, I reached out to Emma Tiedeman to join the students. Emma is the play-by-play voice of the Portland Sea Dogs, the Double A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. She talked about how she got her start, her career in sports, and how interested students can start on that path. She also discussed the role of minor league baseball in small communities, especially in the time of COVID. Here is her calling the Lexington Legends winning the championship in 2019. They won in the 13th inning on a Friday the 13th.
