SMCA Athletics in TAPPS Playoffs (By Kevin Steen, Associate Athletic Director & Head Trainer)

The TAPPS Division II Soccer Playoffs started on Monday. The Girls Soccer team went undefeated in district and won four consecutive district championships, and hosted British International School of Houston in the TAPPS Division II Bi-District Round on Monday, February 22 at Crusader Stadium. The Lady Crusaders won by a final score of 14-1 to advance to the area round. It was a quick turnaround for the Lady Crusaders as the area round was on Wednesday, February 24, where the Lady Crusaders hosted Houston Second Baptist at Crusader Stadium. The Lady Crusaders defeated the Lady Eagles 7-0 to advance to the TAPPS Division II Regionals Round. Kennedy Hill scored 4 goals, Erika Jaimes, Katie Martineau and Sophia Linn each scored a goal. The Lady Crusaders will play Emery/Weiner this Saturday, February 27th at 3pm at Columbus High School.

The boys soccer team finished second in district and hosted Corpus Christi Incarnate Word on Monday, February 22, at Crusader Stadium and defeated the Angels by a final score of 9-1. The Crusaders earned another home playoff game and hosted Frassati Catholic on Wednesday, February 24. The Crusaders scored the first goal of the game and took a 1-0 lead into half. The Falcons responded in the second half and tied the game. The game was tied at the end of regulation and went into two ten minute overtime periods. No team scored in the overtime playoffs, which sent the game into penalty kicks. The Crusaders won 5-4 in PKs to advance to the TAPPS Division II  Regionals Game. The Crusaders will play Lutheran South Academy this Saturday, February 27th at 1pm at Columbus High School.

Wednesday, February 24, was the last game of the regular season for our boys and girls basketball team. Our girls basketball team lost to Providence by a final score of 41-36; despite the loss, the Lady Crusaders finish second in district and will host St. John Paul II Corpus Christi Friday, February 26, at the Carter Athletic Center in the TAPPS 5A Girls Basketball Bi-District Round.

The Crusaders traveled to St. Mary's Hall in San Antonio for their last district game of the season. The Crusaders lost to St. Mary's Hall first time around by seven points, which meant that the Crusaders needed to win by more than seven points to clinch a share of the district title and earned the #1 seed for playoffs. The Crusaders beat the Barons 70-61 to become co-district champs and earned the #1 seed and a first round bye. The Crusaders will host the TAPPS 5A Boys Basketball Area Round on Tuesday, March 2. Opponent is TBD. Congratulations to the Crusaders for their second district championship in the last three years and fourth district championship in the last five years.
