Crusaders Comeback to Defeat Bowie

In what was surely the most exciting boys lacrosse game in years, Junior Tad Brasher netted the game winner in overtime to win 9-8 vs. Bowie HS, completing a comeback from 4 goals down against the fighting Bulldogs.  District foe Bowie jumped to a 5-3 lead at halftime (SMCA goals by Juniors James Meigs, Caleb Eby, and Jack Urano) before the Crusaders began their fight back with 4 goals in Q3 (3 by Sr. Dylan Brucker and 1 by Urano) to tie the game at 7-7.  Q4 proved to be a real battle as both teams took penalties near the end of the game.  Eby scored the only SMCA goal in Q4 but the stout defense held Bowie to only 1 as well, even while killing off two penalties to end the game.  Overtime!

After not scoring early in the period when they had a man advantage due to the end of a Crusader penalty, Bowie lost its cool and committed five(!) penalties in less than one minute.  That left them playing several men short.  Dylan Brucker dodged to beat one man and as Tad’s man slid to cover him, Dylan flipped to an alert Tad, who came around the goal to score from close range.  This was the first overtime victory for the Boys in two years and the largest comeback in at least five years.  In the victory, Sr. Joe Eichorst won 14 of 21 faceoffs and led with 6 ground balls and Javi Garza led the team with 3 caused turnovers.  Long poles Garza, Brodie Maltrud, Brendan Lynch, Jude Turbeville, and Gavin Mahon all played excellent games.   The next game is Monday, March 22, 7 pm at Home against Round Rock.
