Lacrosse Crusaders Triumphant on Senior Night (By Kevin Steen, Associate Director of Athletics & Head Trainer)

On Wednesday, March 31, it was Senior Night for the Boys Lacrosse team as they hosted district opponent St. Stephen's. On a night when six seniors: Dylan Brucker, Joe Eichorst, Javier Garza, Brendan Lynch, Connor Mahon, and Brodie Maltrud, were honored, the team rallied from a 3rd quarter deficit to win 14-11 against  Spartans.

Every senior had a positive impact on the game as the Crusaders led most of the night until a flurry of six goals by the Spartans. That pushed St. Stephen’s to a 9-8 lead with 4 minutes remaining in the third quarter. But St. Michael's counterpunched with a goal by Dylan Brucker to tie it then 3 more in the last 1:15 of the quarter to retake the lead 12-10. The Crusaders made that lead stand up despite having to kill two minutes of penalties in Q4. Senior Dylan Brucker led all scorers with a 6-goal Sherlock Holmes (double hat trick) and was awarded the game ball. Junior Caleb Eby nearly matched him with 5 goals. Junior Tad Brasher contributed 2 goals and 1 assist and Connor Mahon rifled in his first goal of the season. Jude Turbeville, normally a long stick midfielder, traded in his pole for a "shortie" and assisted on one goal and provided strong short-stick defense. Joe Eichorst won 17 of 28 faceoffs, and Brendan Lynch led the team by scooping 5 groundballs. Dylan and Brodie led the team with 2 caused turnovers. Javi chipped in with solid defense and 1 groundball. The team’s record now stands at 4-2 and with that victory over a previously unbeaten (in division) St. Stephen’s team moves our lads into third place (of 8 teams) and clinches a playoff spot.

On Wednesday, April 7, the boys lacrosse team hosted Westlake Class B team. The Crusaders fell 13-7 but
highlights were Junior Goalie Eli DeVries, who saved 18 of 31 shots (58%) and Senior Midfielder Joe Eichorst’s 13-11 advantage during faceoffs. Dylan Brucker and Junior Caleb Eby each finished with 2 goals, and Juniors Jack Urano and Jude Turbeville, and Sophomore Quinn McGucken chipped in one each. Junior Tad Brasher beautifully assisted on Quinn’s goal. Jude led the team with 3 caused turnovers and Joe grabbed 9 groundballs.

The Crusaders are back in action this Saturday, April 10, at Crusader Stadium as they face Gateway at 1 pm.
