Sarah Stuart Joins St. Michael's as Director of Theater (By Stephanie Stewart, Humanities Chair and Roxanne Thurman, STEM Chair)

We are excited to let you know that Sarah Stuart will be joining our faculty this fall as Director of Theater. Ms. Stuart has been teaching Theatre Arts for over 15 years. She received her BFA in Acting from the Conservatory at Webster University and spent time training at the British American Drama Academy in Oxford, England. Sarah is the former Theatre Arts instructor for Trinity Episcopal School, where she taught for six years. She also opened The Austin School for the Performing and Visual Arts where she created and taught the acting curriculum.

A former member of the Conservatory of Theatre Arts in St. Louis and the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts in Santa Maria, Sarah has directed and acted in numerous musicals and plays. Her professional work in Austin includes productions for UT New Theatre and Austin Shakespeare.

“My passion to teach comes from the deepest part of who I am. The foundation of my teaching philosophy can be summed up in Shakespeare’s quote, “To thy own self be true.” With my students, I stress the importance of personal and artistic integrity, establishing emotional connections, and creating a respectful and trusting environment in the classroom and on the stage, one in which the student can fully explore, experience and express the human condition through acting.”

Sarah shares her favorite quote by Goethe:

“Until one is committed there is hesitancy,
the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness.
Concerning all acts of initiative (and Creation)
There is one elementary truth
The ignorance which kills countless ideas and splendid plans:
the moment that one definitely commits one’s self, then Providence moves too.
All sorts of things occur to help that would never otherwise have occurred.
A whole stream of events issues from the decision,
raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings
And material assistance which no one could have dreamt
Would have come your way.
Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it”
 –Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

When not on stage or in the classroom, Sarah enjoys reading, watching movies, visiting wineries, hanging out on Lady Bird Lake, and going to the beach. Again, welcome, Sarah!
