The Biodiversity of Barton Creek (By Matthew Maloney, Anatomy, Physiology & Biology; Environmental Sciences Instructor)

Students in Ecology class went on a field trip to Barton Creek to collect samples and measure the biodiversity of the area. Students took observations about the riparian habitat of the creek and the flow rate and turbidity (murkiness) of the stream itself.

Students then used 1 meter quadrats and counted the number of organisms, as well as the variety of organisms, within their quadrat, and then used the Shannon Index to calculate the biodiversity of their particular area. Students will further this study by picking a species that they found in their quadrat and becoming an expert on that species through research and observation.
