Inaugural Figer Distinguished Teacher Award Announced

During a standing ovation at the Baccalaureate Mass last weekend, the inaugural Figer Distinguished Teacher Award was given to Steve Moreland, Director of Fine Arts. This annual award is bestowed upon a member of the St. Michael’s faculty who exhibits excellence in the classroom, models the core values of the school, engages with the community, creates an innovative learning environment, and contributes to student life within and outside of the classroom.

In response, Steve had this to say:
WOW - What a wonderful and terrific surprise! I am so honored and humbled to receive this award. To have won this award the same year that my very first freshman class is graduating makes it that much more special. I thank everyone who played a part in the selection process. All of the growth and success within the music program and Fine Arts would not have been possible without the support of the administration, community, parents and students - and for that I am extremely grateful.
We thought we’d share a few of the comments from some of those who participated in the voting process:
  • From my perspective as a Trustee and former parent, he has revitalized our music program by introducing a range of inspiring and student-driven programs, from regular themed concerts (e.g., this winter's The Times They Are A-Changin’) to the drumline to commencement accompaniment to a wide variety of other classes. Through these and other programs, our students have consistently achieved the highest marks at TAPPS and other competitions; have inspired audiences (students, parents, and trustees alike) on every stage (theater, field, gym, mass); and have launched individual recording careers. He exhibits all of our core values on a regular basis, but "radiate joy" comes to mind, especially when you see him play and/or direct, hear him speak of his programs and students, and read his reflections on St. Michael's. His time outside of regular hours; his passion for the students, school and subject matter; and his attention to offering programs that appeal to a wide variety of students and audiences -- all demonstrate someone who has given himself in deep service to our community and has exhibited leadership and initiative in moving the St. Michael's learning community forward.

  • Steve Moreland has single-handedly turned St. Michael’s into a school with a solid music program where it basically had none at all. The kids love him, and he has taught them so much in the four years my son has participated. He works tirelessly, is incredibly creative, and has turned the music program into something in which everyone wants to participate. The sold out shows say it best - I think what he has done for St. Michael’s is amazing, and I hope that he will be appropriately honored for what he has done.

  • I don't know how he finds the time to create dynamic shows and discover the talent - sometimes hidden - in his students. He is a leader and mentor and wonderful role model. He has seemingly unending patience with his students, and there's nothing his students won't do for him. He's an amazing talent and a treasure. St. Michael's is a better school because of Mr. Moreland.
Well-deserved, Steve!
