Enrique's Journey Explores Immigration (By Stephanie Stewart, Humanities Instructor)

As Atticus Finch would say,“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view…until you climb in his skin and walk around in it.”

The freshman English classes are trying to do just that by reading the non-fiction novel Enrique's Journey; a story about an unaccompanied minor on his perilous journey to the United States from Honduras. In conjunction with the novel, students are also learning how to vet news sources and to read the news with a critical eye. Students have been writing article summaries related to immigration and immigration policy, which they will use at the end of the unit when they weigh in with their own opinions.
