Rendering: An Architect's Tool (By David Meagher, Social Science & Technology Instructor)

Architectural rendering has long been a part of the architect's toolkit. Taking plans and converting them into a beautiful still image has been used by architects and designers for over 100 years. There are many artistic styles a designer can use, but one of the most enduring looks is a watercolor style rendering. Students in Mr. Meagher’s 3D Modeling with SketchUp class recently completed their first architectural render using this approach. This class places an emphasis on architectural design, function and scale. In this project, buildings are quickly designed in SketchUp, and then taken to Adobe's premier software, Photoshop. Once in Photoshop, students learn how to use brushes and effects bring the design to life. Using a few quick and simple techniques results in a stylish, artistic depiction of the student designs. Moving forward, students will learn about other artistic techniques used by designers, as well as photo realistic methods.
