Should speech be regulated? Spanish 4 students debate the influence of media and social networks on public opinion (By Dr. Daniela Radpay, Spanish Instructor)

Spanish 4 students have been studying topics related to the dissemination of information in a rapidly changing world, one in which almost anyone has the capacity to freely publish information. Students analyzed how this phenomenon affects public opinion and the way people interpret “reality.” For their final project, students were assigned in teams of three to argue for or against a chosen issue related to free speech.
One of the teams argued about the publication of “fake news” and whether people should receive consequences or fines for knowingly publishing false information. Another team argued about how social media, politicians, and businesses influence public opinion, and whether regulations should exist to limit the influence of social networks.

Students used chapter vocabulary, the subjunctive, and debate-related transition statements to argue their stances. Additionally, students prepared follow-up questions to ask their classmates once the debate had ended. The students did an extremely impressive job arguing their stances!
