Students Use Cutting-Edge Design Programs (By David Meagher, Social Science and Technology Instructor)

With a user base that includes professionals in the fields of architecture, engineering, design and urban planning, SketchUp has redefined what a CAD program can be. With its easy to use toolset and intuitive interface, it has become an essential design tool in a wide variety of industries. Essentially, if you can draw a line, you can use SketchUp to create functional designs.

The SketchUp class here at SMCA focuses on a few specific fields including urban planning, architectural renderings, product shots, historical recreations and interior/exterior design.
In conjunction with SketchUp, we use the industry standard rendering engine, Keyshot, to bring the student designs to life. Keyshot uses state-of-the-art lighting and material properties to create a photreal render, a still image of the students design and creations. Keyshot is usually only taught at college and university level; however, SMCA students have been using it since the start of this academic year. Finally, students learn to use Photoshop to provide finishing touches.
