    Includes: Trip to Rome

Winter Term 2021 occurs on the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri in 1321, known to the world as the poet who created the immortal cosmological explanation of divine justice called The Commedia and the poet who inspired the Italian Renaissance. To Italians, he is the quintessential poet and champion of the Italian language. To Florentines, he is a favorite son. To students of Mrs. Priour's classes, he is the poet of the Inferno.

Just in time to celebrate with all of Italy, we will be traveling to Florence to honor his memory and see for ourselves why his Florence was so beloved, providing his inspiration and object of his longing.  We will visit a number of sites in Florence that were important to him and to characters in his epic poem, as well as other locales from which he wrote after his exile from Florence in 1302.

As one of the most important of the Renaissance figures, both literarily and politically, his influence is clear throughout Italy, but especially in Florence.  In addition, all paths lead to Dante in this 700th anniversary year, providing us with once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for special commemorations.

Students should have read Dante's "Inferno" in preparation for this trip.

We will also spend some time in Rome visiting some of the touchstones of the faith at the Vatican and sites of the classical world with which students of history and Latin will be familiar
